Analysis of Research Report ‘The Operation of the In Camera Rule'
The “in camera” research report is a study commissioned by the Department of Justice that looks at how the rule requiring most family law cases to be heard in private works in practice in Ireland. Family law hearings are generally closed to the public and the media, and there are limits on what can be reported, mainly to protect the privacy of children and families. The report examines whether the rule is being applied clearly and consistently, how well court users understand it, and what impact it has on people going through family law proceedings. It draws on the views and experiences of judges, lawyers and other professionals, as well as people who have been directly involved in family law cases, and it compares Ireland’s approach with other countries.
